A New Jersey native, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and his MD from Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and The Medical Center of Princeton, then returned to the University of Michigan Medical Center for a rigorous 2-year academic and clinical fellowship in Geriatric Medicine, with a research focus on infections in long-term care facilities.
